The 25th annual Barney Miller Surf Classic is set to take place this weekend, March 21 - 23, at Sawtell Beach. Established to honour local adaptive surfing champion Barney Miller, the event has, over its quarter-century history, raised more than $500,000 to support individuals living with spinal cord injuries.
This year's beneficiary is Coffs Harbour local, Mike Thorncroft. In January 2024, Mike experienced a life-altering motocross accident resulting in multiple injuries, including a spinal cord injury that led to paraplegia. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Mike has made significant strides in his recovery. The Surf Classic aims to raise $50,000 to support Mike's ongoing rehabilitation journey.
The Barney Miller Surf Classic is a testament to the strength and unity of the Sawtell community, bringing together surfing enthusiasts and supporters to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those facing significant challenges.
